What is scrollytelling?

Scrollytelling is a way of telling a story on a web page where the reader's scroll drives what happens: charts draw themselves, maps zoom, a photo reveals, a number counts up, each at the moment the reader reaches it. The reader sets the pace, and the page responds.

The word combines "scroll" and "storytelling". It became a recognised format in digital journalism in the early 2010s, when newsrooms began pairing long-form writing with visuals that changed as you scrolled, and it has since spread to annual reports, product launches, teaching material, research summaries and portfolios.

How it differs from a normal page

A normal web page is static: everything is drawn before you arrive. In a scrollytelling page, scroll position is an input. Three patterns cover most of it:

• Reveal. Text, images or a chart appear as they enter the viewport, so attention lands on one idea at a time.
• Pinned graphic with steps. A chart or map stays fixed while short text steps scroll past it, and each step changes the graphic: a different bar highlighted, a different year, a closer zoom.
• Scrubbed animation. The scroll bar acts as a timeline. Scroll down and a line draws forward; scroll up and it draws back.

When it works

• When the material has a sequence: a process, a timeline, a before and after, a set of results that build on each other.
• When numbers are the point. A bar that grows while you read the sentence about it is remembered better than a table.
• When the reader has chosen to read, not to skim: a report, a case study, a pitch, a lesson.

When it does not

• Reference material people search and jump around in. Motion gets in the way.
• Very short content. Three paragraphs do not need a stage.
• Anything that must print cleanly or live in email.

Common questions

Is scrollytelling the same as parallax?

No. Parallax is one effect, where layers move at different speeds. Scrollytelling is the format: a story in which scrolling controls the narrative. A scrollytelling piece may use parallax, or none at all.

Do readers need to install anything?

Does it work on phones?
